When you work in dynamic and demanding industries like we do at Aalberts advanced mechatronics, you have to learn to be dynamic yourself and eager to continuously improve. One of our colleagues who has taken that idea to heart is Lorenz Bachmann, Quality Manager responsible for ISEL’S Semiconductor value stream.
inspired at a young age
Lorenz’s professional journey began in his grandfather’s workshop. From an early age, he developed an interest in how things work and building things with his own hands. That early curiosity sparked a passion that would guide him through years of technical education and hands-on experience.
After attending a technical college specializing in mechanical engineering, Lorenz completed a job education as a lathe machine mechanic. Over time, he progressed through a series of roles – shift work, milling operator, mechanical engineer. His path eventually led him to ISEL, which he had first heard about from classmates during his job education and where he did a project while he was studying.
things keep going up
Following those positive first experiences, Lorenz joined ISEL as an employee in February 2020. He was initially responsible for doing the final quality check for ISEL’s robotic systems. It was a hands-on role that suited his background, but his journey was only just beginning. “On the first practical day here, I thought I wasn’t able to do it,” he admits. “But step by step, things have kept going up for me.”
In September 2024, Lorenz started a new position as Quality Representative for the semiconductor industry, and just a few months later he’s on the verge of starting his new role as Quality Manager responsible for ISEL’S Semiconductor value stream. He focuses on ensuring that ISEL’s robots meet the high quality standards required in the semiconductor industry.
boosting leadership potential
These changes mark a significant shift for Lorenz, from working directly with machinery to taking on a more big-picture role. To help him develop a broader, more strategic perspective, he was selected to join CONNECT, Aalberts’ development program aimed at boosting leadership potential. “I was proud to be chosen,” he says. “I’m always struggling with myself, but being selected showed me that others believe in me.”
Lorenz credits his department manager and CONNECT mentor, Thomas Völlinger, for playing a pivotal role in his development. “Thomas has trusted me since day one,” Lorenz shares. “He’s always pushing me and giving me new challenges. When I asked him if he would support me on my leadership path, he said, ‘My door is always open for you.’”
Throughout his time at ISEL, Lorenz has found not just career progression but a sense of belonging. “The robotics department is like a kind of family,” he says. “We’re a really friendly and helpful team. Everybody is proud of our robots and thinks that we are doing something cool together.”
continuously learning and growing
Today, Lorenz is preparing to step into a role with even more oversight and influence. The transition involves mastering new skills, such as giving presentations. “When you give presentations in school, you know your classmates and it feels familiar,” he says. “Now there’s more pressure and more responsibility. I think it will be a challenge for me.”
However, Lorenz is ready to rise to the occasion. “ISEL keeps giving me new challenges, and I keep being pleasantly surprised that I am able to take them on,” he says. “Even though I tend to doubt myself, I keep thinking, well, I was able to do the other ones, so yeah, keep sending me new challenges. I am continuously learning and growing here.”
